Instructions for authors writing original chapters
- Download and complete this Consent to Publish form and complete it. Upload the completed form to this Dropbox folder by May 21st. Each author and co-author should submit a Consent to Publish form.
- Write your chapter. Use this Brill-Sense Style Template (a Word doc) which includes all the styles and formatting required for the handbook.
- Your chapter should be 4000 to 7000 words, not counting references. The abstract should be 150 to 250 words. Here is a Sample chapter in Brill format (PDF). Here is the Brill Author’s Guide (a lengthy PDF). This is a comprehensive guide about Brill’s publishing procedures.
- View this draft version of our Table of Contents for the Handbook. You should see your chapter title there, along with your assigned editor’s last name.
- Work with your assigned Editor to get feedback on your work. Your Editor will assist in getting peer review feedback as well. Submit your chapter to your editor (for peer review) by the deadline in the table above. Submit your initial chapter to this folder.
- The editor(s) will email you peer review(s) of your chapter as we receive them.
- Revise your chapter based on tbe peer reviews and advice from your assigned editor, and submit your revised chapter to this folder.
Instructions for authors submitting previously published works
- Download and complete this Consent to Publish form and complete it. Upload the completed form to this Dropbox folder by May 21st. Each author and co-author should submit a Consent to Publish form.
- Complete this Publication permission request form. (yes, an additional, different form). This form from Brill is for authors of previous published articles. The author must secure permission for their works to be published in our Handbook. Upload the completed form to this Dropbox folder as soon as possible.

Instructions for Peer Reviewers
The deadline for submitting your peer review feedback is August 15th, 2023.
- Evaluate the chapter’s contribution to the field of online learning research, considering its significance.
- Evaluate the overall writing style, language, and readability of the chapter.
- Identify areas for improvement or suggestions for further development of the chapter’s content, methodology, or theoretical framework.
- Provide constructive feedback to the chapter author, offering specific recommendations for enhancement. Consider giving specific feedback or adding comments via “Track Changes” in Microsoft Word. This is often very useful for the author. Note these instructions on how to make your notes in Word anonymous (so the notes don’t have your name attached to each one).
- Complete the Peer Review Form.
- Submit the revised chapter and the peer review form into this folder.
